Preliminary Audition Guidelines

• All audition pieces must be from published plays and/or musical theatre productions.  (No monologues/duets from monologue books not associated with published plays and No solo musical pieces selected from contemporary rock and roll, hip-hop, etc. that are not associated with a published musical theatre production).  Performance selection changes allowed until March 31, 2012.
• Emphasis on musical theatre and stage acting performance.  NO classical acting or singing selections.  
• Dance Solo (no en point ballet) must be choreographed to the actual music from a musical theatre production done in a musical theatre (Broadway) style.
• Selection(s) should be age and content appropriate. NO foul language or lewd material.
• NO props or costumes for preliminary auditions.
• Dress as you would for a professional audition with ability to move.  NO formal wear, jeans or provocative clothing.  Dancers in dancewear.  Avoid distracting jewelry or strange hair or color. 
• Face and slate your information to the panel (name, selection(s) & audition time).
• Must be a graduating college-bound high school senior and have a minimum 2.5 GPA.
• A single student is allowed to compete in only one (1) category.  No duet vocal for 2012.

Preliminary & Finalist Audition Requirements

Material selection should be age and content appropriate. 
NO foul language or lewd material.
NO classical acting or singing selections.
Not adhering to the guidelines and requirements could result in deductions or disqualification.

Prelim Auditions at Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, San Antonio TX
(Apr. 12-15 &/or 21-22, 2012)

Vocal Music-Solo
One (1) up-tempo and one (1) ballad no more then thirty-two (32) bars each.  Piano accompanist provided, or bring your own piano accompanist (do not accompany yourself) or piano accompaniment only on CD-R disk playable on CD player (no orchestration or backing vocals on CD).

Acting-Solo
One (1) dramatic monologue and one (1) comic monologue no more than one (1) minute each.

Acting-Duet
One (1) dramatic or comic piece no more than two (2) minutes.

Dance-Solo
One (1) dance (no en point ballet) choreographed to actual music from a musical theatre production done in a musical theatre style no more than two (2) minute.  CD-R disk accompaniment playable on a CD player.

Finalist's Competition at Charline McCombs Empire Theatre, San Antonio TX

Finalists are required to attend rehearsal on May 21 in the a.m., master class and orientation TBA

Vocal Music-Solo
One (1) up-tempo or one (1) ballad not to exceed four (4) minutes with sheet music only.  An accompanist will be provided.

Acting-Solo and Duet
One (1) dramatic or one (1) comic not to exceed three (3) minutes.

Dance-Solo
One (1) dance (no en point ballet) choreographed to the actual music from a musical theatre production done in a musical theatre style not to exceed three (3) minutes.  CD on a CD-R disk playable on CD player.

Application Checklist

• Application Sheet fully filled out, signed and dated.  Re-check application for completion.
• Checklist Form fully filled out, signed and dated.
• Media Release Form signed and dated.
• Application for the one (1) category in which you are competing.
• Recent Photo (does not need to be professional) with application.
• Bio/Resume with application.
• 500 Word Essay with application on only one (1) of the following:
1. How do the performing arts affect education and community?
2. How have you benefited from the performing arts?
3. How will the performing arts be a part of your future?

Incomplete application, missing support materials or not adhering to the audition guidelines and requirements could result in point deductions and disqualification.
